School needs curriculum materials after fire

THE Dregerhafen Secondary School in Finschhafen, Morobe, needs curriculum materials for 346 grade 10 students, an official says.
District education manager Simon Shong said classes would continue despite the burning down of a building with four grade 10 classrooms and mathematics and English department offices on April 18.
“The building is a big loss to the school’s infrastructure,” Shong said.
“English and mathematics are core subjects of any school and with the curriculum materials and student assessments destroyed, it is not good.”
Chairman of governing council Bussim Stoessel said there was nothing much the school could do to support the affected students.
“The four grade 10 classes affected have more than 80 students each and they will need English and mathematics text books and other subject textbooks as well,” he said.
“Donations of textbooks and other teaching materials will be of big help to the school this month.”
Shong said the issues within the school could not affect the students’ learning because if the school was closed, more than 1000 students would be sent home.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
