More schools eyed as Kabwum moves to meet growing student population

THE growing number of students from primary and high schools in Kabwum, Morobe, is forcing the district administration to fast-track the establishment of more schools.
District education manager Ezekiel Nigo last week said a number of high schools and a secondary school have to be established.
Nigo said the Kabwum Vocational Centre would have to be re-opened.
Speaking during the Bungawat Primary School graduation in Yus LLG, he said an independent monitoring group will be in the district early next year to assess possible sites for a high school in Yus.
He also appealed to landowners to free their land for the establishment of the new school.
The group will also visit Kabwum Vocational Centre, Komba High School and other educational institutions in the district.
Nigo urged the communities in locations where schools will be established to take the lead in building classrooms and teachers’ houses using local materials before the government could fund permanent buildings.
The Yus LLG has committed K130,000 for the development of a high school.
“The government has approved the establishments of those schools and it is now with us to see that they get off the ground and we have to start now,” Nigo said.
Kabwum executive officer Leka Stanley said four high schools in the district will receive K500,000 each for infrastructure development under the new budget.
He said Kabwum High School would be upgraded to secondary level and it has been allocated K1 million.
