Schools get new books
The National – Friday, July 8, 2011
A SHIPMENT of 4,500 new children’s books was delivered last week to the National Library in Port Moresby.
This is part of a deal with local supplier Bizprint which saved the library up to 70% on the normal purchase prices.
Many of the books supplied by Bizprint will soon be distributed by the library to schools throughout the country.
The delivery of 100 cartons included a mixture of children’s fiction and non-fiction and was selected by staff of the National Library from samples supplied to them by the company.
Bizprint sales manager (print and publishing) Bob McTaggart said the 91 titles were primary level books suitable for all grades.
“They were received by the National Library staff, who commented how excited they were to now have such a large range of books,” he said.
“They were looking forward to distributing them to schools.”
McTaggart said the books were end-of-print-runs or remainder books.
“They all contain up-to-date information of world events and are heavily discounted from the original publishers retail price, some up to 70% off and we were able to pass this saving on.”
He said the National Library benefited enormously from buying from a local supplier.
“They received many more books for their kina by buying from us than they would have by purchasing new releases from overseas publishers,” he said.
Books for libraries and schools in PNG are normally funded by the government with the assistance of overseas aid fund from a variety of organisations.
PNG government and community schools select the books they want from the library on a subsidy basis where schools pay half price.
“It is satisfying to continually receive feedback from school principals, librarians, teachers and parents of how pleased they are to have a children’s book supplier here in Port Moresby who knows the needs of the schools and students,” McTaggart said.
