THERE has been overwhelming response to attempts to revive the famous School Soccer in Port Moresby (SSPOM) competition this year.

John Mogi, the interim chairman of SSPOM told The National yesterday that he has received calls from primary and secondary schools including requests from IEA schools expressing their interest to take part in the competition.

The foremost thing for the SSPOM is to organise volunteers to run the competition every weekend.

Mogi has called on schools to submit the names of their physical education teachers (sports teachers) to be part of the school soccer competition.

He said the age groups for this year’s competition were; U-6 (Mixed), U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14 and U-16. It must be clearly noted that in the U-6 division, the players must be four or five years of age and in U- 8 division, they must be six or seven years old.

Mogi said schools interested to take part must also submit names of their girls’ teams for the competition – this is part of the requirement to bolster girls’ participation in soccer.

“I am calling on volunteers as referees, age group coordinators, and also women (girls) volunteers to submit their expression of interest to me or members of the LOC,” he said.

The competition is expected to run from April to June, and will be played under a five-aside format as there are no proper fields.

Mogi said the SSPOM would be held in three different conferences – Moresby North East, Moresby North West and Moresby South.

The games will be played on a home-and-away basis which should ease the burden of players travelling far and wide.
