Schools still closed in Kutubu area

SCHOOLS in Kutubu local level government area in the Nipa Kutubu district have been suspended and only three are in operation.
The schools were suspended after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Feb 26 that damaged most of the infrastructures, making it unsafe for students and teachers.
Southern Highlands education caretaker adviser Leo Supiri confirmed that only three schools were still operating while others, including the Kutubu High School, were closed. The three are Muvi, Orokana and Danuga primary schools.
He said the schools were able to continue classes because of the support of the community to reconstruct damaged classrooms and teachers’ houses.
“I travelled several times to the disaster affected areas and visited the schools and there were more damages done,” Supiri said.
“But the support of the communities to reconstruct infrastructures was vital instead of waiting for the government.
“I am thankful with the parents and people who supported the schools.”
Supiri said he had written to the provincial school subsidy coordinator and provincial examination supervisor to provide the three schools with their subsidies or TFF funds and include them in their grade 8 national examination.
He said the schools has not received any school supplies.
