MORE than 50 grade 12 students attending Sogeri National High toured the newly built Port Moresby sewerage system funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) and Kumul Consolidated Holdings.
“These are students taking Japanese language and science subjects,” teacher Wesley Soko said yesterday during the excursion.
“The school has established relationship with Japan and this tour is basically to show to the students how Japan is contributing to the development of Papua New Guinea.
“Eight of the students among this group have been to Japan in an arrangement between the Japan Embassy in PNG and Sogeri National High last year.”
Student Possie Tapkisoleng said the excursion related well to his studies in physics and chemistry.
“I feel privileged to hear engineers speaking about the development of this plant and how it will be operating,” he said.
Sewerage system upgrading project site manager Yusuke Takano said the plant was designed to treat sewage from a population of 90,000 in the city
He told the students that the sewage went through different stages of treatment and separation to obtain pure treated water which is discharged into the sea.
“The treated water discharge into the sea is fit for marine life,” he said.
