IT was all excitement and fun at the Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup Fan Zone at Vision City when former England women’s soccer star Alex Scott met with PNG players yesterday.
This was to the delight of Scott, who showcased her skills to the excited crowd at the arena.
The presence of a player of Scott’s calibre, who made the 2011 Fifa All-Stars team, was a morale booster for the young players she met and interacted with.
On the mini soccer pitch, she played with schoolgirls, young women and a combination of PNG U20 girls in their last appearance in front of the local crowd.
Scott joined in and danced to the Fifa U20 World Cup song, composed and performed by Daddi Gii and Mereani Masani
The English woman said she was proud to be here to witness the World Cup.
She signed mini balls and presented one of her uniforms (jersey number 12) to PNG coach Lisa Cole, who accepted it on behalf of the team.
“PNG should be proud of this team with the excitement they had last night (Sunday) after scoring a goal,” Scott said.
“My message to PNG is to believe and have confidence in yourself.”
It was also a proud moment for Nicolette Ageva, who was asked by Scott how she felt scoring PNG’s only goal in the tournament.
“I forgot that I scored a goal, I forgot about celebrating,” Ageva said.
“It was a proud moment for PNG as everyone in the stadium celebrated the only goal. Even if we lost, it was a big challenge for me and my team as we played our hearts out.”
