Screen candidates for public office

Letters

THIS is a call to the Constitutional Law Reform Commission (CLRC) to look into the eligibility criteria of people running for public office.
Our country is probably the only country in the world where people with limited to no proper education contest the election.
It’s similar to a Grade 8 primary school drop-out applying for a manager’s position in a company.
The CLRC should be vocal about this because people who are elected are responsible for effecting change in the people’s standard of living.
It is shocking that this reform hasn’t been given a single thought over the years.
The other issue is that candidates are abusing our democratic privileges to apply for public office.
The CLRC, if successfully in seeking this reform, should create a mechanism that enables a cabinet minister to have specific experiences in the ministerial portfolio that they will assume when taking office.
Laws should be created/amended to stop a prime minister/cabinet minister from handing out ministerial portfolios as if it is Sunday school offering.
This reform would allow proper discussions to be conducted so that person with the reliable knowledge and (managerial) experience in the particular field can assume office.
This form of technocratic governance (parliamentarians who are selected based on their expertise in a particular field), in some way would ensure that proper people are given mandate and we can, for a change, see constant dialogue by every MPs regarding matters of national importance during parliament sittings.

Reformist,
Pom
