Sea travellers in Kimbe warned

THE disaster office has warned coastal villagers travelling by dinghy into Kimbe town for services not to at this time because of strong winds and heavy rain in the province.
Villagers along Talasea and Kandrian-Gloucester should keep away from the sea for safety reasons, West New Britain Emergency and Disaster acting director Leo Porikura said.
“Bali and Bitu Island were isolated local level government areas which were prone to natural disasters because they were close to the sea and exposed to strong winds,” he said.
Porikura told The National that enough messages were relayed to the coasters through community awareness using posters and notices on public boards.
“I want to tell my people that it is not safe out at sea and everyone must take extra precautions when travelling,” he said.
He said locals travelling along the New Britain Highway that linked Kimbe and Kokopo should take care because strong winds and rain may caused flooding and trees to fall on roads.
Porikura said it was import to heed the warning for their safety.
