Secondary school focuses on agriculture

A SECONDARY school in Lae is putting more emphasis on agriculture to equip students with knowledge on farming when they leave the formal education system.
Busu Secondary School, one of Papua New Guinea’s top performing schools, started a habitat and livestock programme in 2018 for a school exhibition. According to school principal George Nobel, the programme had grown to include about 14 different animal species.
The livestock include horses, cattle, goats and chickens as well as animals endemic to the country such as a cassowary, cuscus and crocodiles.
The school also has a fishpond.
“The habitat is there for students studying biology to have easy access to studying the animals they learn about in theory,” Nobel said.
“The other aspect is life skill.”
