Seeking connection to past in Veiru

Letters

IN this time of shutdown due to the Covid-19, I have made attempts to write our memoirs including our two wonderful years in PNG with the Papua Ekelesia from 1966 to ‘67 as AVA volunteers stationed at Chalmers College, Veiru, with the late Rev Sue Rankin who became our dear friend – known to our children as auntie Sue.
I recently made contact with a Ralph Butcher, the 101-years-old son of the Rev Ben Butcher who built the house at Aird Hill which we visited several times.
Also memories of personalities – both Papuans and others – have all been brought to mind, and we wonder where they are, if still living, as we are!
The Wards-Geoff and Shirley (English), Johnson and Christine Nicholl, (teacher at Aird Hill), Margaret Naismith (SA) etc.
Ps Sibona, Penny the builder, Luka whom Graeme taught basic mechanics, Moika (nurse) Doma who minded our little son Stuart etc.
Anyway, do you have any current details of past Chalmers, Veiru/Orokolo staff?
Also I have many handwritten letters to us from Sue Rankin – her family might like to have them or the church for records.
And also our copious notes of our day to day activities while living there.
I wonder if this email will reach you – I do hope so.

Jean and Graeme Thorpe.
