Segeyaro to stay a Shark

AFTER spending almost the entire off-season in limbo, hooker James Segeyaro has re-signed with Cronulla on a one-year deal.
The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio reports Segeyaro returned to training yesterday to reunite with his teammates, while Channel Seven revealed the deal was a 12-month extension.
Segeyaro’s retention comes as a surprise as signing news was not expected out of the Shire until their salary cap saga had reached a resolution.
Only a week ago, rumours circulated that the Sharks were at risk of losing star recruit Shaun Johnson as they face significant penalties that could force them to cull players to be salary cap compliant for the start of the 2019 season.
The NRL are expected to hand down their penalty on the Sharks at a landmark ARL Commission meeting tomorrow, with player misbehaviour also on the top of the agenda.
According to Sporting News’ NRL Leaks, Johnson’s Cronulla future is safe after the NRL green-lighted his contract — a process the governing body wouldn’t have completed if they were preparing to inform the Sharks he needed to be the fall guy.
It appears the club also has received approval to sign the 2014 Dally M hooker of the year.
The enigmatic rake had received interest from Newcastle and Parramatta, however nothing eventuated from the speculation.
Segeyaro played 23 games for Cronulla last season, mainly from the bench, averaging 33 minutes per game as Jayden Brailey’s, pictured, accomplice. This year, however, Segeyaro faces stiff competition from playmaker Kyle Flanagan for the utility role, as well as Brailey’s younger brother Blayke.
Newly-appointed coach John Morris said Flanagan was keeping halves pairing Johnson and Chad Townsend on their toes and was edging towards a spot in his starting 17.
