PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill says the appointment for a chief ombudsman is ongoing and he does not interfere with the process.
He said an advertisement for the position of a chief ombudsman had gone out and officials are screening applicants.
O’Neill said the process of appointing a chief ombudsman was “not a one-man decision”.
He said this in parliament last Friday during question time while responding to a question by Rabaul MP Allan Marat why no definite appointment of a chief ombudsman was made.
“The appointment process is still going on, there has been an advertisement of that position and the officials are going through the list interviewing applicants. Today we have an acting Chief Ombudsman Phoebe (Sangetari) and office is still operating,” O’Neill said.
Marat said there was an urgent need to appoint a chief ombudsman as the ombudsman commission was essential to the implementation of the country’s leadership code.
He questioned why O’Neill to confirm public opinion through social media that it is conflict of interest for not having a fully commissioned ombudsman commission?
He asked the prime minister if he would submit himself to the country’s legal process where he will have a golden opportunity to prove his integrity and restore public confidence in the integrity of government in PNG.
O’Neill said: “I have not stopped. I have every right to question the integrity of the process and that is precisely what I am doing.
