A SEMINAR focusing on the Goroka Fresh Food Market will be held at the Melanesian and Pacific Studies (MAPS) Centre of the University of PNG today.
It will be conducted by Pro Mark Busse, presently a senior lecturer in anthropology at the University of Auckland.
This seminar outlines a new research project on the fresh food market in Goroka.
Considerable research exists on food production in PNG, but there is little on markets where urban residents have access to food and make choices about what they will eat.
This new research seeks to understand the Goroka market from the perspectives of the market’s diverse participants.
Preliminary research carried out in 2011 documented the diversity of these participants who are of different ethnicities, education levels, and socioeconomic status.
Women are producers and vendors, but men control transport and administer the market.
It will be held at MAPS’ language laboratory from 4-6pm today.
