PAPUA New Guinea international and Hamilton Wanderers forward Tommy Semmy says he is making strides in New Zealand’s premier football competition as he aims to crack the A-League.
The 25-year old, who was named in the International Sports Promotion Society Handa Premiership first 11 in the 2019-2020 season, told The National last week that he was satisfied with what he had achieved in his fourth season in New Zealand’s top flight.
“I was super excited about it when I was named in the competition’s first eleven for last season,” The former Hekari United star said.
“I want to dedicate it to my country, my club and my family. There’s so much to it.”
Semmy said he was making progress but insisted that he was eager to go one step further by playing in the Australian top flight.
He came within touching distance of achieving his dream when was enlisted by New Zealand based A-League side Wellington Phoenix for a pre-season trial last year.
Although he did not get signed by Phoenix, Semmy said he had learned new tips and the experience had motivated him to push on with grit.
“I joined the Phoenix for a week’s trial and the atmosphere there was unbelievable,” he said.
“It was a great experience. Hopefully, I can make it to the A-League one day. It’s all in God’s plan.
“It’s achievable but I’ve got to keep working harder to improve as a footballer.”
Semmy’s Wanderers finished sixth after the season ended prematurely last month due to Covid-19 pandemic with competition leaders Auckland City claiming the title.
Meanwhile, Semmy has appealed to Papua New Guineans to remain calm and have faith in God during the pandemic.

  • Thank you Semmy for acknowledging God in your achievements. PNG is proud of you. You have set a bench mark and a part way for future PNGans. You can make it to A league if you continue being God’s embassador in soccer.
