SEPIK FC introduced futsal to the children of Buimo Correctional Services staff on Monday as part of the Women’s National Soccer League club’s efforts to promote the shorter format of football.
Team manager Nathan Loi said it was an initiative of the Sepik Futsal Association (SFA) and they were focusing on developing the skills of children under 12 years old.
“Developing children at this age will help them become better footballers in the regular 11-a-side format,” he told The National.
“Our general secretary and SFA president Clarence Hukahu has initiated a futsal festival which will be delivered by our players who have come through the shorter format.
“Focusing on children at this age, we believe that the future of football in Papua New Guinea will rise to another level.
“We do not need millions of Kina to start something, we just need the right people to do the work and the rest will be history.”
Loi said the festival was aimed at teaching children how to warm-up, dribble, pass and control possession.
“We are just starting it here at Buimo,” he said.
“But we’re willing to help introduce the code to organisations and schools.
“The programme is good for schools especially elementary and primary schools.”
“In Wewak, we have involved many schools and teachers have taken the initiative to run the programme for children.”
