THE Sepik Futsal Association (SFA) completed its first soccer league grand final last Saturday at Moem Barracks in Wewak, East Sepik.
The league games started last November after the completion of the SFA’s Futsal season in October.
A total of 20 teams participated in the under 17, under 23, open men’s and women’s divisions.
All the teams came out of SFA’s four local associations – ward seven Wewak Rural LLG, Moem, Wewak Urban Primary Schools and Wewak Central.
In the grand final matches Kreer Primary School defeated the Silver Bullets 2-1 in the U17 men, Sundogs edged Frontiers 1-0 in the U23 men and Frontiers beat Cousins 1-0 in the women’s division.
In the men’s open division Frontiers defeated Moem Futsal Association 3-1.
SFA spokesman Clarence Hukahu said the idea of a soccer league was to get local Futsal players accustomed to the laws and concepts of soccer and trial out PNG Football Association’s (PNGFA) National Soccer League (NSL) concept on a smaller scale.
Hukahu said SFA executives were proud of the association’s efforts in the past four years of its existence and looked forward to 2012 with the following programme:
l Futsal pre-season, February-April;
l Soccer League pre-season; May-July;
l Futsal proper season, August-October; and l Soccer league proper season, November-January (2013).
SFA will also run Futsal championships for different divisions during school term holidays and prepare its U17 and U20 teams for the PNGFA-hosted national championships.
