EAST and Sandaun provinces reported quiet, trouble-free Christmas celebrations with hundreds attending different church gatherings at the weekend to commemorate the birth of Christ.
Sandaun provincial police commander Chief Insp Sakawar Kasieng said on Monday that even though restriction on the sale of liquor was relaxed, people observed Christmas in its true spirit with no major trouble reported by police.
Chief Insp Kasieng attributed the trouble-free celebrations to a special police operation, Angels on Assignment, that helped create an environment which was conducive for the peaceful celebrations.
In East Sepik, police also reported a crime-free weekend as people celebrated the festivity in churches and on the sports fields with different games.
Others who had nowhere to go celebrated peacefully in the comfort of their homes to avoid troubles.
