Service has no place for abusing staff
The National, Tuesday April 29th, 2014
THE Correctional Service does not have time or sympathy for officers who abuse women and children, Acting Correctional Service Commissioner Michael Waipo said yesterday.
Abusing women and children will not be tolerated, he warned.
The public was aware of officers abusing children, Waipo said.
“This is unbecoming of a member of the disciplinary force who continues to commit this unaccepted practice,’’ he said.
“People who do this should seriously reconsider their position with the Correctional Service.
“Under the jurisdiction, we are to take care of prisoners, this has to be reflected by officers’ behaviour.
“In practice, the Correctional Service is an avenue to rehabilitate offenders and officers should exemplify this in their homes.
“Correction is our job and officers should be experts on that matter instead of inflicting physical suffering on women and children.”
