THE Lutheran church will revive its shipping services but at a much smaller scale than before, head bishop-elect Rev Jack Urame says.

Urame, who was elected bishop last month at the 31st Lutheran synod in Finschhafen, said the revived Lutheran Shipping would come under the company name “Lutheran Shipping Services” owned and operated by the church.

“We will revive Lutheran Shipping. But this time at a much smaller scale,” Urame said.

“The aim is not to build a big company but provide the traditional shipping services to our church members in the coastal areas.”

He said the original intent of creating Lutheran Shipping Services was to ferry church members and laymen to and from coastal areas for mission work.

He said as the company grew it deviated from its original intent and purpose and became concerned with making profit.

“We will go back to the way things used to be.”

Urame said apart from providing spiritual guidance the church had an obligation to provide social services to people and shipping was one of them.

He said the name Lutheran Shipping Services would be maintained because it was a flagship name for the Lutheran church and known by many people.
