POLICE have arrested seven men caught at a check-point in Madang carrying 50kg of marijuana.

Officers on duty at the Tapo quarantine check-point arrested the seven men who were travelling from Goroka on Sunday.

The drugs were neatly wrapped and packed in 10kg rice bags and other small packs.

Senior Const Bill Mohe said the seven were travelling in two buses.

Madang MP and Police Minister Nixon Duban, who was in Madang last weekend, said people must not smuggle drugs into the district.

“Whoever is involved in drug smuggling and the production and consumption of homebrew must know that the government is passing tough laws on these illegal practices,” Duban said.

He blamed parents for not disciplining their children who were now involved in the drug and homebrew trade.

“Police manpower is short and parents must have control over their children because if they don’t, they will become their enemies,” Duban said.
