Seventy-two beche-de-mer operators get licences

THE National Fisheries Authority (NFA) issued licences to 72 beche-de-mer (BDM) operators around the country yesterday.
The presentations were done in Port Moresby with deputy managing director Noan Parkop telling recipients during a BDM awareness session and licence presentation for the 2020 fishing season to be responsible and compliant in the industry.
The licences were issued to those who had paid compliance fees.
“From the resource owners to the buyers and exporters, you all play a very important part of the process in this industry,” Parkop said.
“This is your fishery which NFA is managing on your behalf. Sometimes it can be tough but sometimes that’s what is required.
“Sometimes it requires discipline to get good performance. So let’s all be involved, take responsibility.”
Parkop told the participants not to shy away when issues arise in the industry but openly discuss them with NFA as they came up.
