Sewage spill at Gordon bus-stop a health hazard
The National – Wednesday, July 6, 2011
I REFER to the appalling sewage spill at the Gordon’s bus-stop on Monday.
I was on board PMV route 17 and as we were approaching the bus-stop, we could smell some foul odour.
As we looked for the source of the smell, we saw raw sewage all over the bus-stop area.
What we saw was sickening.
You could even see toilet paper among the raw human waste floating everywhere, posing a health hazard to the public.
The sewage spill not only smelled terrible but associated bacteria posed a serious health hazard to the public.
Inhalation of these particles can cause adverse health effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
Besides, raw sewage poses the biggest threat to public health when it enters the water supply system, where it is diluted and spread much wider than where it originated.
I call on the responsible authorities to take necessary measures to resolve this issue.
I believe the longer that contaminated water remains, the greater the risk of infection occurring.
