Sex crimes rising: Police

POLICE record shows that sexual offence cases have increased more than armed robbery and car hijacking in Port Moresby this year.
So far this month, there have been five rape and minor sexual offence cases reported, and only two on armed robbery and car hijacking. National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou urged city residents to closely keep an eye on their sons and daughters below the age of 12.
He also blamed the “behaviour and bad attitude” of parents and guardians in their families which bred criminal acts.
“Everything starts from home,” he said.
“Police will not go into homes and start changing them.
“It is the responsibility of individuals. Parents must look after their children and not let them out of sight (because they can) become victims of rape and other sexual offences.”
He said quick police responses to crimes in the city had helped clamped down on robberies and car hijacking.
