THE Sepik Futsal Association (SFA) is preparing its players for soccer tournaments next year by running its first soccer league competition.
SFA spokesman Clarence Hukahu said the objective was to have SFA’s players accommodate to the style and form of soccer as opposed to the smaller Futsal games.
The league games started last month and the semi-finals were held last weekend with the grand final to be played on Jan 7-8.
There are four divisions in the league – U17, U23, open men’s and women’s.
Hukahu said SFA, which is in its third year, is using the league games to prepare its U20 development team for invitations next year.
SFA entered its U17 men’s team this year at the national championships in Goroka. It was also invited by PNGFA for the U20 national championships but did not attend. It wants to be prepared better for next year.
SFA’s four local associations Wewak Primary Schools, Wewak Central, Moem Barracks and Wewak Rural LLG participated in the league.
SFA will be taking a two-week break to support another tournament that will be organised by Wewak Football Association with the support of Michael Wagambie of M S Wagambie.
Wagambie said he wants to revive soccer in Wewak and surrounding areas in East Sepik by sponsoring the tournament.
The Wagambie-sponsored competition will run from Dec 24 to Jan 1 and hopes to attract teams from Wewak and the surrounding areas.
