POLICE will step up patrols and visibility in the National Capital District from tomorrow until next week because of special events in the capital city.
NCD Central assistant commissioner of police, Fred Sheekiot said police manpower and resources will be mobilised for the special security operation.
“The heightened security alert is necessary to maintain law and order in the city during this week’s parliament session and the Dec 9, Supreme Court decision,” Sheekiot said.
“Police recruits and staff from Bomana Police College and police headquarters will join operational units to maintain security and surveillance at parliament house, the national court premises and other vantage points around the city.”
A police mobile squad contingent from Lae will arrive this week to participate in this operation.
“There will be increased police deployment on the streets of Port Moresby and as such, I expect our good peace-loving citizens to respect the law and remain calm throughout this crucial period,” Sheekiot said.
He said random roadblocks would be mounted around the city plus foot patrols in designated areas to curb crime.
Meanwhile, Chief Supt Norman Kambo will replace National Capital District police boss Joseph Tondop as the acting metropolitan superintendent until the arrival of Supt Peter Guiness.
Sheekiot said Kambo would act for a week to allow Tondop and Guiness to prepare themselves for their new postings.
Sheekiot said a formal ceremony would be held next week.
Tondop yesterday handed over the metropolitan superintendent’s responsibility to Kambo at the Boroko police station.
The event was witnessed by senior police officers in NCD.
“In-house formalities were made but there is no official handover,” Sheekiot said.
Sheekiot said Tondop was expected to be in Lae by next week to take up his new position, while Guiness is expected to move to the capital shortly.
He said everything was under control.
