Machinery for the K77.5 million Madang airport extension project arrived at the Port of Madang on Monday.
The shipment came after the airport ground-breaking ceremony performed by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill two weeks ago.
O’Neill said Madang had the potential to improve in tourism and the extension of the airport would play an important role in that.
He said Madang airport may have further upgrading to accommodate Boeing 737 aircraft in the future.
Madang Governor Peter Yama said that in the next 10 to 15 years, the province would change in terms of economic development.
He said major projects included the Pacific Marine Industrial Zone project that aimed to provide employment for 30,000 people, Yandera mine project, Kurumbukari mine extension, and Ramu Block One timber.
Yama said an airport was an important infrastructure a province should have and thanked the Government for extending airports around the country.
The new Madang airport will have a two-storey terminal building, improved facilities and a new security system.
It will extend to where the old Lutheran Shipping compound is.
Yama urged people living in nearby settlements to allow the project to run smoothly and look after materials for work.
Civil Aviation Minister Alfred Manase said the project would take 18 months to complete.
