Shipment delay affects bulb onion supply

A SHORTAGE of bulb onions in some Port Moresby supermarkets was due to a delay in shipment, says City Pharmacy Ltd chief executive officer Navin Raju.
Raju however said all Stop & Shop outlets in Port Moresby were selling onions.
“There is a shortage of onions in Port Moresby due to delays in shipment,” Raju said.
He said bulb onions were available as of yesterday.
“Onions were late by a week,” Raju said.
“They were supposed to arrive on the Aug 14.
“Our shops do have onions though (mostly from Kundiawa/Gembogl in Chimbu).”
Last year, CPL founder Sir Mahesh Patel partnered with MP William Onglo to supply bulb onions to Port Moresby’s SNS shops.
“The idea is to substitute imports. Sir Mahesh had said.
“We buy a lot of onions from Australia and New Zealand, yet we can grow everything here.
“The challenge for us as a company and for the farmers as well is why cannot we produce everything so that we can stop importing food.”
