THE Papua New Guinea National Rugby League has confirmed that the Digicel Cup round eight double-header scheduled for Port Moresby will be played at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium.
This was clarified by PNGNRL chairman Sudhir Guru, pictured.
“The match between the Port Moresby Vipers and Enga Mioks will not be played at the National Football Stadium,” Guru said.
He said the PNGNRL nor the Digicel Cup had not endorsed or approved any fixtures at the NFS as the competition organisers and the venue managers were still in negotiations. He said the double-header was confirmed for Sunday, with the Gulf Isapea taking on the Simbu Lions at 1pm, with the main encounter between the Vipers and Mioks at 3pm.
The curtain-raiser will see the Port Moresby Rugby League (PRL) Under-20s start proceedings, with Butterflies taking on Hohola Flies at 10am, before the Tarangau play Kone Tigers in the A grade at 11.30am.
Guru said security would not be an issue, with extra security personnel to be brought in to ensure a repeat of last weekend’s bottle-throwing by Hela Wigmen fans did not take place again.
“I want to warn fans to behave and not disrupt the games as police will arrest and charge any rowdy and unsafe conduct by people at the venue.”  Guru said his management, working in tandem with the Port Moresby Rugby League, had organised the Digicel Cup roadshow for the weekend.
The Digicel Cup top-of-the-table clash is between competition leaders Lae Tigers and hosts Agmark Gurias at the Kalabond Oval in Kokopo, East New Britain.
Standings: Tigers 13, Gurias 12, Eagles 11, Wigmen 7, Tumbe 7, Mioks 7, Mendi Muruks 7, Isapea 7, Vipers 6, Lahanis 6, Lions 1.
