Shortfall in maritime workers

 PNG’s Maritime Industry is fast growing as can be seen by recent inclusion of PNG LNG shipment, offshore operations in oil and gas sector, upcoming sea bed mining activities and maritime administration ashore. Regular advertising of maritime positions by shore administration in our daily papers indicate a shortfall in qualified personnel and it is also evident that there is more recruitment of expatriate maritime personnel in PNG. If the National Government through its statutory authority, NMSA, can create sponsorship or scholarship programmes for current maritime skilled personnel to upgrade their competency that would be an advantage in combating the shortage.
