THE Buiebi Correctional Service in Southern Highlands has been allocated K1 million from the 2019 provincial government budget passed last Thursday at its assembly meeting.
Governor William Powi said this year the provincial government would be focusing on law and order and the funding was for maintenance work to be carried out at the institution.
He said he understood that the institution needed urgent maintenance to its aging infrastructures due to the Feb 26 earthquake.
The institution has been facing water problem since the earthquake last year after the water pump was badly damaged and prisoners were transferred to Baisu in Western Highlands, 36 were transferred back to Buiebi last month.
Powi said to ensure law and order issues in the province was properly looked into, the Buiebi CS, the National Court House and police housing and logistic have to be a priority.
He said the provincial government and Oil Search Ltd will work in partnership to build police houses in Mendi.
“The provincial government released K1 million last Dec to build police and public servants houses. A funding of K3 million will go to the National Court House to be rebuilt, K700,000 will be allocated to recruit police and police operation assistance is K1 million,” he said.
Powi said acting provincial commander Chief Inspector Gideon Kauke had furnished a report to the provincial government of requirements at the Poroma, Mendi, Kagua, and Ialibu police stations and K1 million was allocated this year.
“For the election-related and peace reconciliation process in the province, the provincial government has allocated K2.5 million. The peace reconciliation process will take time and funding will be made to ensure peace is finally restored,” he said.
