SHP roads deteriorating: MP

Highlands, Normal

THE Government must fund an alternate route into the oil and gas-rich Southern Highlands province to avoid traffic congestion on the current Highlands Highway.
Deputy Governor and Mendi MP Pastor Isaac Joseph called on the Government to open up the Mendi-Tambul road as an alternate route in Southern Highlands and onto Tari.
With business booming in Tari and the western end of Southern Highlands province, a lot of heavy trucks and container vehicles were constantly using the highway which posed traffic hazard for the traveling public.
He said the people of Southern Highlands consider the highway as their lifeline to their livelihood.
“The section of Highlands Highway from Mt Hagen to Mendi and onto Tari is the lifeline of the people and Government should seriously look into improving the roads.” Pr Isaac said
He had already committed K1 million as counter funding with  the Member for Tambul-Nebliyer and hopefully the Government would seek more funding to assist in opening the Mendi-Tambul road.
