THE Southern Highlands government and its provincial administration has promised to buy a new water pump for Buiebi jail.
Jail commander Senior Inspector Bop Omba said the pump would costs around K124,000, including transportation from Australia to Mendi. The old one has broken down.
Omba said they were happy that Governor William Powi had given the green light for the provincial administration to buy a new pump.
The jail has been closed since June because of water problems caused by the broken pump. The 40 remandees and 21 prisoners were transferred to Baisu jail in Western Highlands.
Inspector Omba said his officers were waiting for the pump to be fixed to reopen the jail. Buiebi can accommodate 200 prisoners and remandees at the same time.
