The Tewae-Siassi district and the people of Siassi Island are preparing to host Evangelical Lutheran church women’s synod in September.
The district development authority, with church members from the island, shifted machines for roadworks, with materials for the synod hall construction arriving on the district vessel Mv Sulu Express on two shipments yesterday.
The DDA under MP Dr Kobby Bomareo has bought building materials worth K1.2 million for the synod hall.
The women’s synod hall would be able to hold a thousand people.
The hall’s foundation has been prepared, with frame, roof and walls already bolted in.
The permanent materials would be screwed in to complete the hall once the ship arrived.
Siassi DDA rep Willa Omole said the authority had also allocated K500,000 for road and airstrip maintenance and upgrade.
He said the shipment was the start of implementing projects in the island.
The vessel transported supplies to the district, and cash crops back to Lae.
The maintenance of airstrip and roads would firstly be focused on preparing for the women’s synod in September.
“Islanders are preparing,” Omole said. “Almost 13, 000 people in the island are happy that machineries have been delivered for improving transport services.”
He said houses for the delegates with toilet facility and kitchen have been completed.
“The only thing we are waiting for is the conference hall. Everyone is looking forward to hosting women from the 17 church districts.
“We welcome and invite all women to come and see life on the island.”
