Simbu girls bag gold at nationals

MINGENDE Primary School carried the Chimbu flag at the National Athletics Championship in Ulapia, East New Britain, with its girls winning five gold medals for the province.

Anna Goir and Jenny Albert from Mingende won two gold medals each while Mary Kua  won a gold.

Coach Paul Komba told The National from Kokopo earlier in the week that Goir won the 10,000m and 5,000m while Kua won and 3,000m.

Albert won the 800m and 1,500m. Team Simbu also won three silver and four bronze.                                                                                                                                         

The national championship which started last Friday and on Sunday attracted athletes from 21 provinces.

Komba said Chimbu won more gold medals compared to other six highlands provinces – Enga and Eastern Highlands won a gold medal each.

“I’m very happy with my athlete’s performances, they didn’t let the province down,” he said.

Komba, who is a sports master at Mingende primary school said the province was now preparing for the 2014 PNG Games in Lae.

He thanked Simbu Governor Noah Kool, Eresula Printers and New Guinea Islands Regional Police commander Billie Anton for their valuable assistance during the championship.
