GOVERNOR Sir Julius Chan has urged the New Ireland business community to come up with new and innovative ideas to stimulate the economy.
The New Ireland government met with members of the chamber of commerce on Thursday to get a grasp of how the business community was doing during the state of emergency.
Sir Julius said the New Ireland government had set up an investment team, headed by chief adviser Dr Bruce Harris.
“The future depends on sustainable business,” he said.
“New Ireland needs you to grow our economy.
“My government believes the business world should flourish on its own, with little influence from the Government.
“If Government were to run a business, it would fail. That is why we are relying on you.
“Come up with the plans and investment, my government will support you with land and through policy.” Sir Julius said a lot of problems arose from people in authority abusing their privileges.
“They must be dealt with so that once again, we can earn the respect of the people,” he said.
The business community said it was a challenging time for them and with little communication coming from the provincial Covid-19 coordinating taskforce team.
Concerns over the rundown state of the Kavieng police station were also raised.
Sir Julius said New Ireland could barely survive with no funding from the Government, even after it had borrowed so much.
