NEW Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan has expressed sadness at the passing of Baroness Margaret Thatcher, a former prime minister of Great Britain.

Sir Julius said he met Thatcher in London on his visit to the United Kingdom in 1981.

He said he was tremendously impressed with her strength of character and political intelligence.

“She was a formidable woman and a powerful leader who stood head and shoulders above her contemporaries,” he said.

“When convinced a policy was right, she dedicated her heart and soul to bringing it to completion.

“And when she was committed to a course of action she was an irresistible force – no one and no circumstance could deter her from her goal,” he said.

He said Thatcher was not only the first female prime minister of Britain but was one of its longest-serving prime ministers.

“Baroness Thatcher, along with such leaders as Indira Gandhi and Golda Meir, showed the world that a woman can not only be the equal of men in politics, but can also surpass them,” he said.

“She was the midwife of the rebirth of the British economy, single-handedly taking it from the brink of economic chaos to economic prosperity through her monetarist policies, the privatisation of public enterprises and trade union legislation.”

“Britain and the world owe her a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.

Sir Julius said would be missed but not forgotten.

“She will forever stand with Cromwell, Gladstone, and Churchill as the towering figures in British history,” he said.
