Sir Mekere’s legacy lives on

Letters

WE were junior bank officers with the then PNG Banking Corporation’s (now Bank South Pacific) Port Moresby branch when late Sir Mekere Morauta was the managing director.
We bought a piece of land from the Anglican church at Waigani Heights.
We applied for a loan to build our home there, but our loan application was declined, so we approached Sir Mekere.
He wrote ‘approved’, signed it and wrote the date.
It was from that approval he made then, that today, after building our home, we founded a child-minding school.
We are now operating as Tengei Christian Academy.
In 2003, Sir Mekere donated to the school its first photocopier.
He made a difference in our lives.
The academy has been in operation for 30 years (1991-2021) from kindergarten to grade 8.
We are commencing grade 9 this year.
This is the history of Tengei Christian Academy, made possible by Sir Mekere, who through his humbleness has impacted a great difference and a testimony in our lives.
Through Sir Mekere’s actions, we are educating our children and future leaders of Papua New Guinea.
With great sympathy, we extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to late Sir Mekere’s family, friends and associates for a great leader, a man of understanding and wisdom.
Sir Mekere will never be forgotten.
He has written history in its best reflections to all Papua New Guineans.
