Sir Nagora is chancellor
The National, Monday March 31st, 2014
SIR Nagora Bogan has been appointed Chancellor of the University of Technology by the university council.
The university council members are Dr Musawe Sinebare, Dr Wari Iamo, Paul Mawa, Jean Kekedo, Sam Penies, Peter Eafeare and George Bopi.
Dr Albert Schram was reinstated as vice-chancellor by the council.
They were all nominated by Minister for Higher Education, Science, Research and Technology Delilah Gore under her powers under the University Act.
It comes in the wake of an order by the National Court last week that the former council led by Phillip Stagg be reinstated.
Acting chancellor Ralph Saulep yesterday said he was conferring with lawyers on the legality of the appointments by Gore.
The decision by Goire was made after taking into consideration the prolonged classes boycott, Schram still being on the payroll and the effects of an academic year being terminated.
Minister for Justice and Attorney-General Kerenga Kua praised the student’s non-violent approach.
“Your fight is interested in dealing with the underlying rot,” Kua said.
Sir Nagora said he accepted his appointment with grace and humility and announced that the new council voted for Dr Schram to become vice chancellor.
