THE late Sir Sinake Giregire was honoured with a 21-gun salute before he was buried at the family’s Gire Coffee estate.
Goroka police performed the honour before the former firebrand politician was lowered into his final resting place.
His family led by son Major John Giregire decided to bury their father at the first Gire Coffee plantation and factory he built.
They wanted to see their father’s grave at the estate as they tried to revive the plantation and the factory.
Sir Sinake was a pioneer coffee plantation owner, coffee processor and politician
representing Goroka and the Daulo districts.
He lost his Daulo seat in the 1977 election to Gai Duawambane.
He formed the Country Party, served as state minister and once vied for the position of Governor General where the late Sir John Guise defeated him.
Sir Sinake passed away at his Port Moresby home on Jan 4.
A group of people joined the family in farewelling him.  Chairman of the state funeral organising committee Raisis Gondorawe thanked Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, Eastern Highlands Governor Malcolm Kela-Smith, Daulo MP Kondo Patrick and all who contributed to the funeral costs.
