NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop will sign a memorandum of understanding to establish a sister-city relationship with Shenzhen in China.

“We are very excited about this growing relationship between Port Moresby and Shenzhen, a city that is one of the pillars of the economy of China,” Parkop said.

“We can see that there is going to be a lot of benefits coming from this mutual relationship.

“I’m ready to go to Shenzhen to sign the agreement so that we cement the relationship between the two cities so that it becomes sister cities.

“I believe this relationship will be beneficial to our city and our country seeking to leverage it to get support for some of our infrastructure in the city.

“I’ve given them some of the things that we could work towards to help us build some of the infrastructure in the city. Otherwise it’s mainly social and cultural and those types of exchange.”

He said Port Moresby had similar arrangements with Townville in Australia.

“We have technical advisers from Townsville who help us with city planning and designing some for the roads and other infrastructure in the city,” he said.

“They also train our staff in NCDC in various fields like physical planning, city waste management, and managing the environment.”
