UNITED Sisters softball club had a double celebration over the weekend, winning both the Port Moresby women’s A and B grade grand finals on Saturday.
In the A grade, the Sisters steamrolled a depleted Bears side 15-2 on run-ahead rules at the completion of the third innings.
Earlier in the day, in the B grade grand final, United Sisters shrugged off strong challenge from Yokomo to win 20-15.
The highlight of the afternoon was the A grade final match which kept spectators on edge with much anticipation.
Bears got off with a shaky start at the top of the first innings through Lisa Polum and power hitter Nadia Bais.
Opening batter Lisa Polum was safe on first after a good hit outfield while the next batter Joyce Inguba, who attempted a bunt, was run-out for first down.
Polum was safe on second while third batter Nadia Bais made a safe hit to centre outfield to bring Polum home for the first point while a poor return and overthrow to second and third base saw Bais sprinting home for the second point.
United Sisters’ opening three batters Tesalia Karai, Bessie Xkenjik and Florence were all caught out for side-away at the bottom of the first inning.
At the top of the second innings, the Sisters took the field determined, with the mother-daughter combination of pitcher Selina Karai and daughter Tesalia restricting the first three batters.
Quandalylne Vinim and Talitha Tarasomo were sent back to dugout courtesy of K2s while Helen Tata was stranded on base as Janice Soweni could not get her home for all out — again courtesy of Selina’s K2.
The floodgates opened for Sisters at the bottom of the second innings when they picked up seven runs through Priscilla Moke, Selina Karai, Nicole Mamia, Niateng Pokanau, Clair Wutt, Bessie Xkenjik and Florence Daple to take the lead from Bears 7-2. Bears had the opportunity at the top of the third innings but their poor batting let them down while Sisters had a merry-go-around, picking up eight unanswered runs to bring their tally to 15-2 to win.
