Round 12 of the Capital Rugby Union competition got off to a flying start on Saturday with the women’s 15-a-side opening matches that saw Sisters beating Harlequins 29-10.
The main match for the women’s division saw defending 10s champions Nova edging out the Wan Pigs (Wanderers and Piggies) 7-5.
The Wan Pigs, boasting a strong forward pack, were quick to register a try in the opening minutes following some strong defensive play in the ruck.
Discipline was a concern in the latter stages of the game with Wan Pigs forward Lala Oki given a yellow card after she was judged to have used inappropriate language at a match official.
With their numerical advantage, Nova were able to run through for a try to bring the game back on even terms.
However, successful conversion saw Nova running out victors at fulltime.
In the men’s premier division, a brave Crusaders outfit were defeated by the Wanderers 10-7 in the opener of Saturday’s double-header.
The Wanderers opened the scoring with a try five minutes in through the quick reaction of their forward pack led by captain Foster Maso.
The Crusaders, led by veteran Frank Gabi Jr showed class in attack with an impressive show of passing and ball control from their backs to respond to the Wanderers’ try and to push themselves two points up with a successful conversion (7-5).
The match came down to an arm wrestle at the back end with the Wanderers proving their strength with yet another unconverted try to give them a three-point lead resulting with a victory at the final whistle.
The main match of the afternoon saw Nova taking on competition giants University Piggies in what was expected an even tussle.
The match instead saw University roll over their opponents, scoring five tries to one in a 22-8 win.
