SISTERS beat Tiare 27-23 to take out the Lae Netball Association premier grand final at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium Netball Courts on Saturday.
The Sisters reserves were also victorious in their grand final after they beat FTM Stingers 27-25.
Sisters coach Martha Aaron said both grand finals were close contests.
“I am happy because of our two wins in the senior divisions,” she said.
“For our A-Grade team, last year we lost by one goal to Hetura Netball Club. This year, we won by four.”
“We knew that to win, we had to either take the lead or tie the game in the third quarter in order for us to sail home. And we did.”
Sisters have won three premier grand finals since 2010 and lost only two. Saturday’s win is their fourth grand-final victory.
Tiare A-Grade coach Tui Walo told The National that their players performed well in the first three quarters.
“It is the first time for most of our girls to play in a grand final because over the past years, we have been finishing third every time.
“We really thought we had it but it was a good game. We still get to take home the runners-up trophy.”
Lae Netball Association president Shirley Lung said the junior grand finals went well, with FTM Stingers taking out the Under-13 and U15 titles.
“It was a good season for the association executives,” she said.
“The grand finals started with the U13s and U15s.
“FTM Stingers beat Defence in both divisions.” Lung said the association also held a mixed men’s netball match after the grand finals, adding that “the interest is there and we hope that it continues”.
