SIX alleged murderers are among 13 men who escaped from the Popondetta Police Station cell on Sunday night.
One man was recaptured, with 12 still on the run of which six are detainees – suspects in several cases of causing grievous bodily harm, armed robbery and drug use. Northern police commander Senior Inspector Ewai Segi said police were investigating how they had got hold of a tool that enabled them to cut padlocks.
“Between Sunday and Monday morning, 13 men cut two padlocks inside the police cell, opened the door, cut through another padlock on the outer door before climbing to the roof, lifting the roofing iron of the station and making their way out onto the roof before running for freedom,” Segi said.
“One (causing) grievous bodily harm suspect surrendered on Tuesday morning. A general appeal for public support in recapturing the 12 suspects within last 72 hours have resulted in the suspect surrendering on Tuesday morning.
“Police have credible leads to the whereabouts of the escapees and more arrests are expected accordingly. This investigation will allow us to find out what happened.
“Those harbouring the 12 men will be charged with aiding an offender. When you sight someone you know is on the run, please report it to the police station,” Segi said. “I ask all communities in the province to assist the police.”
