SIX men have been arrested after an auxiliary policeman on Mushu Island in East Sepik was killed with a spear gun on Christmas Day while he tried to stop
drunken youths who were behaving disorderly.
Wewak police station commander Charles Parinjo said the policeman was shot in the lung and died on the way to the Wewak General Hospital.
Wewak police have arrested six men on the island, including the prime suspect.
No charges have yet been laid on the six
who are being questioned.
Police also reported an unlawful wounding incident at Karapia village, Yangoru, at a customary ceremony on Christmas Day.
There was another fight in retaliation but police intervened and arrested a number of people who are now in custody at Maprik.
In another incident in the Yangoru area, disgruntled landowners from Maringe village pulled down a power pole over the weekend for non-payment of outstanding claims over damaged cash crops.
Police said the cash crops were cleared to make way for the rural electrification project in the Yangoru-Saussia electorate.
Parinjo said the power pole had been replaced by PNG Power.
He urged villagers to sort out their grievances legally and not
disrupt vital services.
