AUSTRALIAN Football League Papua New Guinea’s (AFLPNG) Em Nau Niukick programme entered its third weekend of activities at Port Moresby’s Murray Barracks Oval with an increase in schools participation.
Southern development manager David Topeni told The National yesterday that six schools joined programme with Niukick preparing to hold its competition next month.
“We’ve been hosting mini matches for the past three weeks and the participation from schools during that time has increased steadily,” he said.
“So far, we have six schools that joined us and we’re sure more will be coming because we’re running basic skills like kicking and we’re having matches at the end of it all.
“The schools competition will begin on Aug 7 and this will be for the all the participants of the programme.
“We will have boys and girls divisions for the Under-13s, U14s and U16s which will be targeting primary schools in the city.
“There will also be an U17s for boys and girls in high school and they will all run together before we close the programme and competition in October.”
Topeni said the competition was only for Lae and Port Moresby with AFLPNG to introduce the programme to other centres later.
“Given the numbers in Lae and Port Moresby, the two centres will go ahead with their schools competition while the other centres must submit a Covid-19 plan to AFLPNG before they run the programme,” he said.
