Six teams confirmed for NCD Governor’s Cup finals

SIX Teams are now confirmed for the 2017 NCD Governor’s Christmas Cup finals in the bowl, plate and cup divisions tomorrow at Kone Tigers Oval in Waigani.
Governor’s Cup tournament director Bosky Koke confirmed the six teams after the washouted games and preliminary finals yesterday.
Saraga Survivors advanced to take on the Urunawini Raiders in the bowl grand final after defeating the ATS DC3 14-10 in their washouted out game at Kone Tigers yesterday.
In the plate division, the Makana Cowboys saw off a competitive Kone Falcons 6-2 in their preliminary final.
The Cowboys face the D8 Mosquitoes, who defeated the Talai Spartans 12-0 in the preliminary final on Tuesday.
Tomorrow’s main clash, the cup final, is between the Mountain Bulls and 9-Mile Giants.
The Giants secured the spot in the Governor’s Cup grand final after beating a strong Freeway Bumpers 18-0 in the cup preliminary final yesterday.
Giants coach Steven Gunua said the win was a result of all their hard work during the Christmas and New Year.
“It was a good effort by everybody. We’ve come through unbeaten from the pool stage so we’re feeling confident heading to the final,” Gunua said.
The Bumpers looked sharp in the opening minutes with experienced players like former Enga Mioks player Presley Solo, Kingston Paul and Junior Yambe.
Gunua commended his players especially five-eighth McKenzie Buka and fullback Damien Herod.
The Giants, who lead 6-0 at halftime, came out firing in the second stanza with three unconverted tries to earn their grand final berth. In the women’s game, the 5-Mile Kongos advanced into the grand final to take on the Mosquitoes after beating City Redbacks 12-8.
