SIX young Papua New Guinea university students were awarded the Archer Leadership Scholarships during a ceremony in Port Moresby this week.

The scholarships, part of the Kokoda Track Foundation’s work in leadership, support final-year tertiary students on a year-long, intensive, experiential leadership development programme. Over 60 applications were received from across the country.

The 2016 recipients are Jerome Sesega (law, UPNG), Petra Seinian (biology, UPNG), Johnetta Lili (accouting, UPNG), Kelly Samof (economics, UPNG), Sylvia Kaski (business studies, UDWUPNG) and Jeremy John (information and communication science, UPNG). On the night, 2015 Archer leaders graduated from their leadership development programme and were presented with certificates by Patrick Lindsay, KTF Chairman.

The Archer alumni now comprise 36 students and they have established themselves as an incorporated association in PNG.

They have bold plans for the future and are committed to continuing their leadership work in PNG.

Kokoda Track Foundation chief executive officer Dr Genevieve Nelson said: “When I hear these students passionately speak about leadership and the changes needed in Papua New Guinea. I am extremely hopeful and excited about PNG’s future. The talent keeps getting better and better. Every year it is harder to select the winners.”

The Archer Leadership Scholarships aim to find and foster the next generation of PNG leaders.  The scholarships are funded by and named after the Fred P Archer estate (administered by Perpetual Trustees).
