THE National Museum and Art Gallery yesterday received five human skulls that were repatriated from Sydney where they were part of an Australian estate.
The skulls, exported to Australia on various occasions over the past 60 years, were part of a Lilian Hoffman collection that were offered for auction following the collector’s death.
Gallery director Dr Andrew Moutu said the information about the auction was brought to museum curator’s attention in Sydney who later negotiated for the eventual repatriation.
Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture Boka Kondra stressed the need for more PNG artefacts held overseas to be returned.
